What Have Two Decades of TB-500 Studies Shown?
Researchers made TB-500 from part of Thymosin Beta-4, hoping to understand repair. Animals showed some improvements. The same help hasn't been proved for you.

What is the first fact that matters?
Researchers made TB-500 while looking for ways to help wounds heal. The compound contains seven amino acids, small parts that form proteins. A short chain of those parts is called a peptide. Thymosin Beta-4 is a whole protein your body already makes. Studies explored skin wounds and injured tendons, which join muscles to bones. Ligaments, which hold bones together at joints, were studied too. Researchers also examined damaged hearts, hair roots and brain injuries. Two early human trials checked the whole protein for harm. Nobody has finished a trial comparing TB-500 treatment with another group's care.
A rat's healed wound can't promise help for your knee.
The FDA is the US agency that checks medicines. The agency hasn't approved this small piece for treating people. WADA sets the world rules for drugs in sport. The compound is banned both during competition and between competitions. The effects page separates people's experiences from findings checked in studies.
Where Did the TB-500 Peptide Come From?
Researchers first took Thymosin Beta-4 from a calf's thymus gland. This gland helps the immune system fight infection. The work began in the early 1970s. By the late 1990s, scientists were studying wounds in rats and mice. Later, researchers made TB-500 by copying a short stretch of that protein. The copied stretch runs from parts 17 through 23. The complete protein contains a 43-amino-acid chain made of linked protein parts. Researchers added a small chemical group to the chain's tip. Drug tests can spot that change; the change doesn't prove better healing. Its lab weight is 887 daltons, units used for very small particles.
The whole protein and the copied piece have different parts.
Thymosin Beta-4 and TB-500 sometimes share a name in papers. That makes knowing what was tested especially important for you. The whole 43-amino-acid protein has more parts than the 7-residue TB-500 piece, meaning seven joined amino acids. amino acids are tiny parts that join to form proteins. Thymosin Beta-4 and TB-500 may leave your body at different speeds. A study of Thymosin Beta-4 cannot settle every question about its piece.
Rat experiments showed the clearest wound effects of Thymosin Beta-4. New skin covered wounds 42% more at 4 days. The increase was 61% at 7 days. The wound edges pulled together at least 11% more. That measured wounds closing, rather than flesh wasting away. Collagen increased; this protein supplies much of the skin's strength. More tiny vessels also grew to bring blood to wounds [2]. The stretch copied in TB-500 helped skin wounds close in mice too. Those mice were old or had diabetes; treatment went on their skin [1].
Better animal repair leaves human healing unproved.
Ho and colleagues reported a horse drug test in 2012. The test found tiny amounts in urine and blood from horses [12]. Detecting the compound didn't show whether the compound healed an injury. The FDA has not approved TB-500 for treatment in people. Early human safety trials gave Thymosin Beta-4 through a vein [9][10]. Those trials didn't test the copied piece for injury repair.
How Might TB-500 Help Cells Move?
Some animal wounds closed sooner after treatment with these compounds. Other studies found repair changes in damaged ligaments and hearts. TB-500 and the whole Thymosin Beta-4 attach to actin, a protein forming supports inside cells. One tiny particle of compound holds one actin particle, making a 1:1 match. These tiny attachments control how much actin can join into supports. A cell changes those supports as the cell stretches and moves.
That may explain animal repair; your healing still needs human proof.
Animal experiments and dish tests checked repair in these tissues:
- Skin: fresh skin spread over wounds sooner [1][2].
- Ligament: repaired collagen had a more even arrangement and tested stronger [3].
- Heart: more cells survived, and damaged hearts worked better [4][5].
- Hair roots: resting cells that form hair became active [6].
- Muscle: cells needed for new muscle moved toward injuries [15].
- Brain: more tiny vessels grew in injured rat brains [8].
- Liver and heart: researchers found less scarring [5][14].
Cell movement helps skin, ligaments and muscle repair after injury. Hair roots and heart tissue also depend on cells moving. TB-500 encouraged this movement in several kinds of tissue. New vessels supply damaged tissue with blood carrying oxygen and food. Poor blood supply can slow healing in an injured animal. More vessels may help, but animal findings don't establish your result.
The TB-500 cell movement explanation describes what each study actually found.
Why Isn't TB-500 a Muscle-Building Steroid?
A steroid and TB-500 belong to different kinds of compounds. The small compound is made from joined amino acids, the parts of proteins. Muscle-building steroids come from cholesterol, a fat your body makes. Steroids change how cells respond to hormones, substances that carry messages between parts of your body. The small compound instead affects proteins that help cells move. The small piece dissolves in water, while steroids dissolve in fats.
Different makeup doesn't lift the ban in sport.
Sport discussions sometimes call TB-500 a steroid. WADA puts TB-500 with peptides and substances that affect growth. Muscle-building steroids belong to another group on the banned list. The ban covers competitions and the weeks between competitions. Breaking the rule can mean up to four years away from sport.
What Does the Name TB-500 Tell You?
TB-500 is the research name given to the copied piece. The longer name used by early researchers was Thymosin Beta-500. The fragment copies parts 17–23 of Thymosin Beta-4. Researchers used '500' to distinguish the copied fragment from Thymosin Beta-4. Some papers describe the copied fragment by naming its chemical parts.
A similar name isn't proof of the same effects.
The first question is which compound the researchers actually tested. Many animal experiments gave the complete protein rather than its copied fragment. A result for one cannot prove every effect of the other. Your injury needs evidence about the compound actually being considered. The answers about TB-500 explain why that difference matters.
Which Results Give the Clearest Answers?
Twenty-one findings explain the repair work and its limits.
Rat skin wounds: Thymosin Beta-4 helped fresh skin cover the wounds. Amounts were as low as 10 picograms, trillionths of a gram. New coverage rose 42% by day 4 and 61% by day 7. The copied stretch also helped old or diabetic mice heal wounds [1][2].
Mouse repair can't prove how your skin would heal.
Rat knee ligaments: Thymosin Beta-4 improved repair in injured ligaments. Researchers put 1 microgram in glue that seals injured tissue. A million micrograms have the weight of one gram. After 4 weeks, the repaired tissue looked more even and tested stronger [3].
Mouse hearts: Two studies found that more damaged heart cells survived. Hearts worked better, and less scarring followed heart attacks [4][5]. These mice cannot establish a heart benefit for you.
Hair roots from rats and mice: Small amounts stirred resting cells into activity. Cells in the skin moved toward areas needing repair. The cells also released a substance involved in repair [6].
Early human safety trials: Each trial gave whole Thymosin Beta-4 to 40 healthy volunteers. Trials in the US and in 40 Chinese volunteers checked harm. US vein doses ranged from 42–1260 milligrams. These aren't proved doses for your injury. Reported problems fell in the mild or moderate range. The summaries don't name every symptom. No problem was severe enough to stop testing larger amounts. Blood levels were higher after larger amounts, without buildup after repeated treatment [9][10].
Findings from 2024–2025: Injured nerves regrew better in zebrafish [19]. Researchers joined two copies of the whole protein together. That pair healed mouse eye wounds better than one copy [20]. Thymosin Beta-4 eased inflammation in mice with excess fat in their livers. Each mouse received 12 milligrams daily per kilogram of the mouse's weight. Shots went into the belly cavity, the space around organs [21].
The TB-500 paper list names those studies.
